Hold your kid’s interest for hours with this recipe for homemade kinetic sand. It’s a great fine motor activity too. Homemade art supplies and activities for daycare are a great way to save money!
This homemade kinetic sand only takes a few ingredients and they aren’t expensive. You can have the sand made in no time. If you hate messy play, you can let the kids use it outside. Kinetic sand is far less messy than regular sand. Plus it’s an amazing sensory experience.
All you need is to grab some colored play sand or if you want to use uncolored that’s fine too. But the sand needs to be fine play sand, not regular sand. Then add some corn starch and mix it well. And then add the olive oil and mix it with your hands until it’s combined. (Of course, the kids can be in charge of this part) Your hands will be silky soft afterward.
Homemade kinetic sand
Supplies needed:
- 2 1/2 cups of colored play sand
- 1 1/2 cups of cornstarch
- ½ cup olive oil
Directions:
- Mix cornstarch and sand together well.
- Mix in the olive oil until combined.
If your kinetic sand gets wet, just leave it to air dry and it will be fine again when it dries out.
Does kinetic sand dry out
Since it’s not made with water, it does not dry out. If yours loses some of its stick-together texture, just add a few drops of olive oil and remix it. It will be as good as new.
