Its quick and easy to make homemade spice mixes and taco seasoning mix is super versatile to use. It’s great for making taco meat and tons of other recipes. I love making my own seasoning mixes.
I have multiple food allergies and chemical sensitivities so additives are a big deal to me. After reading about the effects of many additives to the body, I no longer wanted to feed those types of food to my kids and family either.
I also make homemade seasonings like these that you’re gonna wanna make too:
- bbq rub
- Italian seasoning
- ranch seasoning
- Fajita Seasoning Mix
- Simple Steak Seasoning
- Homemade Poultry Seasoning
I use taco mix to flavor my beans. First, I soak the beans in the morning and drain and rinse them in the evening of the same day. Then I put the soaked beans in my crockpot and fill it with water.
I add a serving of my homemade taco seasoning mix and cook it all night on high. The smell that permeates the house is intoxicating and the beans taste DELICIOUS! When the kids come in, everyone remarks on how great it smells in here. Then those beans are great for a ton of recipes including these dirt cheap bean burritos that my kids can’t get enough of!
Taco mix can also be used to season ground beef, chicken, or whatever you want to add a little spice too. It’s great to have on hand and used for many recipes. It’s less expensive for me to make my own than to buy prepackaged mixes at the store. I love that!

To purchase any herbs and spices we don’t grow, I use the website bulkfoods.com because they have pure products with no added fillers or salts. If I buy chili powder from them, I get just chili powder.
Many times when you buy chili powder at the grocery store, your chili powder will contain additives such as anti-caking agents and fillers such as gluten that make it bulkier and thereby less expensive to produce. I am not allergic to gluten, but I want to know what I’m eating.
And you can grow your own spices at home too!
All natural taco seasoning
I buy many foods in bulk because it’s less expensive and less packaging to go into the landfill after I use the products. I use old spice containers to store my mixes in so they don’t collect moisture.
Since I don’t use anti-caking agents, sometimes my mixes clump together. That’s okay with me. I just give them a stir and everything is fine!

Doesn’t 2 teaspoons of cayenne pepper make it too spicy? I love tacos but I can’t handle the extra spice.
You are welcome to cut it down and see how it works for you. Maybe start with 1/2 teaspoon. This mix makes multiple batches of tacos, so it’s up to your individual taste. Thanks for checking it out though.
