I love me some bagels and schmear and this garlic and herb schmear is some of the best I’ve ever eaten. It would be a disservice to bread not to share it. A few months ago when I was making herb mixes for the year with my family, my sister and I (with the help of my mom) came up with the world’s best garlic bread seasoning mix. You gotta make some!
We have been using it on everything from scrambled eggs to topping for baked potatoes. I’ve made compound butter, roasted vegetables, the best tortellini soup I ever ate in my life and more!
When I say you gotta try it, you gotta! It’s easy and fun to make.
Bagel and schmear
So after all these things I’ve tried, I’m pretty sure I found THE BEST way to enjoy the garlic bread seasoning mix and it’s garlic and herb schmear. OH MY WORD! It’s amazing.
And it couldn’t be easier to make. The one thing I will add is that it tastes better after it sits for a while. So let it marry together for an hour or so or up to several days for optimum deliciousness!
Schmear bagel
So the proper way to eat a bagel is to schmear a hefty amount of your “schmear” onto the bagel and enjoy. Schmear is a German originated word and usually refers to fatty spreads such as cream cheese, mayonnaise or butter.
But it has morphed into a term referring to the spreading of cream cheese on a bagel. And bagels are nearly a religion on some places. New York for sure has a bagel culture. And it’s one I’m not opposed to! (Can You Freeze Cream Cheese?)
Cream cheese schmear
Schmear is a term applied to cream cheese to put on bagels, but schmear is delicious on any kind of bread. I love it on bagels which are some of my favorites, but another favorite is french bread. Oh yum. I’m getting hungry again!
Did you know you can even make homemade cream cheese? It’s super simple!
