Store-Bought Vs. Homemade Chapstick

One of the most popular beauty products on the market today is chapstick. Making your own chapstick is a great way to avoid chemicals you might find in store-bought chapsticks. Many chapsticks contain harsh chemicals that can damage the skin and lips.

Chapstick is a petroleum-based product that is made with a variety of chemicals and fragrances. While many people enjoy chapstick for its moisturizing properties, you want one without those harmful chemicals, especially for your family.

Petroleum acts as a barrier to your skin, so you aren’t even getting the moisture your lips desperately need! Other names for petroleum include mineral oil, petrolatum, or paraffin.

Another one of the most popular chemicals in chapstick is propylene glycol. Propylene glycol is a skin irritant and can cause allergic reactions. In addition, propylene glycol is a carcinogen and a solvent.

When you buy chapstick from the store, you are also getting a host of other chemicals. Many store-bought chapsticks contain parabens, sulfates, and phthalates. These chemicals can be harmful to the skin and can cause adverse skin reactions.

Other chemicals in chapstick include artificial flavors, colors, and fragrances. Each of these can mean a whole bunch of different chemicals blanketed under these phrases. It is better to avoid these traditional Chapsticks whenever possible.

There are so many health benefits to making your own chapstick. First off, you will know what ingredients are actually in your lip balm because you are making it. You can also choose what colors and fragrances go into your Chapsticks, making them personalized to fit your needs and preferred flavors!

The ingredients in this DIY vanilla chapstick recipe are natural products, each with its own benefits as well.

Natural Chapstick

This recipe uses avocado oil to nourish the lips, and it offers many benefits. For one, avocado oil is rich in nutrients such as vitamin E and vitamin A. These nutrients help to keep the skin healthy and elastic, and they also promote collagen production. Avocado oil is also a natural moisturizer and has a high content of antioxidants.

Shea butter is also beneficial, as it contains antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. This makes it a great choice for Chapstick because it helps to keep the lips free from bacteria and blemishes. Shea butter is also a natural moisturizer and can help protect the skin as well due to the high content of fatty acids.

Beeswax helps to keep your lips and skin smooth and hydrates them as well. It will help to keep the Chapstick from melting, too, and is another safe product for your Chapstick.

This recipe uses vanilla essential oil. You want to find an oil that is natural and safe to use, especially for lip balms. Plus, the smell of vanilla can have a calming effect on your entire body and the brain!

Chapstick makes a great gift for friends and family. Not only do they enjoy the all-natural lip balm, but they also appreciate that you made it yourself. Use this handmade vanilla Chapstick recipe next time you run out and gift it to your family for Christmas!

Making your own chapstick is a great way to avoid harmful chemicals and to know exactly what is in the product you are putting on your lips. It also offers a variety of benefits that can be hard to find in store-bought varieties. So if you’re looking for a healthy and safe chapstick recipe, try this one out!

How to Make Chapstick

  • Use any carrier oil you prefer. Avocado oil is great for your skin, but coconut oil and jojoba oil work well too. You can also use an infused oil as well for further skin benefits and smell.
  • Both the microwave and the double boiler methods work well with this recipe.
  • You can choose to use any essential oil of your choice or leave out the oil if you wish.
  • This recipe makes it not very thick and leaves a slightly glossy feel on your lips. It is not heavy like other Chapsticks.
  • If you want a vegan recipe, swap out the beeswax pellets for candelilla wax.
  • Adding in a few drops of vitamin E oil will help to further preserve the lip balm.

Servings: 2
Author: Christina

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ teaspoon avocado oil
  • 1 teaspoon beeswax pellets
  • ½ teaspoon shea butter
  • 5-8 drops of vanilla essential oil
  • 2 circle chapstick containers

Instructions

  • Screw the middle piece of the circle Chapstick container into the lid, not the bottom of the container. Make sure you hear a click.
  • Add the beeswax to the avocado oil and microwave, or use a double boiler until melted.
  • Then, add the shea butter into the mixture, stir, and heat until melted as well.
  • Add in your drops of essential oil and mix well.
  • Pour the mixture into the containers and just fill until it touches the middle piece. Filling too much will cause it to leak and won’t secure properly.
  • Let cool for a few hours. You can also play in your freezer for 30 minutes to speed up the process.
  • Close the Chapstick container until it clicks. Flip over, and it is ready to use!
  • The middle piece should securely attach to the bottom, and leave a circle of Chapstick to use.
