Early exposure to science also helps them build a strong foundation for future academic success.
Simple experiments are a great way to improve fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, language development, while learning about scientific method and experience sensory activities. There are fun ways to learn and science is the perfect opportunity.

Magic Dancing Rainbow Rice Science Experiment
Ingredients
- 1 16 oz clear container
- 1 C water
- 1 Tbsp baking soda
- Spoon
- Spill Tray
- ⅓ C rainbow rice * see below for rainbow rice directions
- ½-1 C white distilled vinegar apple cider vinegar can be used
Instructions
- Gather all the supplies needed.
- Place the clear container into the spill tray. Add water and baking soda, and stir with a spoon until the baking soda is dissolved.
- Add the rice.
- Slowly add some vinegar to the container and watch the rice dance!
Notes
Seal the bag and gently mix the paint and rice until it’s completely covered. Repeat this process
until all the colors of the rainbow are created. Carefully pour the painted rice onto a wax
paper-lined cooking sheet to let dry for 2-3 hours or overnight. Use the same process for the
pink rice.
Why does this reaction happen? When the vinegar reaches the baking soda it reacts and
releases carbon dioxide gas. The gas bubbles attach to the rice making them “jump.” When the
bubbles pop the rice sinks back down. More bubbles are created that will attach to the rice,
which starts the whole process over!
