Each day will focus on a different aspect of German culture, incorporating songs, crafts, stories, sensory activities, and simple German words from the German language to create a fun learning experience.
Learning about a German custom or specific traditions and German influence on our life today is a great way to expand our knowledge about various cultures. You can even ask family members who may know old German recipes or geographic features of Germany they can share with the kids.

I like to start each unit I do with a book. Esop’s Fables and Grimm’s Fairy Tales are both German collections. So I grabbed my mom’s copy of Grimm’s Fairy Tales from when she was a kid and we read the story of Sleeping Beauty.
German Fairy Tales
Activity: Read Sleepy Beauty, a German Fairy Tale. Kids can act out parts of the story if they’d like.
Introduction to Germany
Activity: Show a globe or world map and locate Germany. Check out the German flag and talk about the colors.
German Folk Dance
Activity: Dance to a German polka or “The Chicken Dance.”
German Garden
Plant a German garden with foods that are grown in German such as potatoes, leeks, cabbage, and carrots.
German Folk Music
Activity: Play traditional German folk music while the children color.
German Flag
Activity: Color the German flag (black, red, and yellow stripes).

Activity: Explore traditional German foods. Make homemade soft pretzels.

Activity: Explore German artists and creativity. Show simple works by Paul Klee and discuss colors and shapes. Create a Paul Klee-inspired abstract painting.

Activity: Make traditional Alpine hats out of paper.
