Why Cottage Cheese Works in Pasta Bake

Cottage cheese may not be the first thing you think of when you hear “pasta bake,” but it’s an excellent alternative to cream or ricotta. It adds a mild, creamy texture and boosts the protein content of the dish without being heavy. When baked, it blends smoothly into the pasta, tuna, and veggies for a well-rounded, creamy finish.

If you prefer a smoother texture, you can blend the cottage cheese before mixing it in. This tuna casserole is not as heavy as the traditional recipes, but it’s so full of flavor.

Tuna: A Pantry Staple That Shines

Canned tuna is a great ingredient for quick and easy dinner ideas. It’s full of lean protein and pairs well with pasta and mild cheeses. In this dish, tuna adds a savory depth and helps make the meal more filling. Make sure to choose tuna packed in water for a lighter option, or use oil-packed tuna for richer flavor.

To lighten the dish and sneak in some extra veggies, this bake includes sautéed onion and zucchini. The onion brings sweetness, while zucchini adds moisture and a soft bite. Both are kid-friendly and blend in well with the creamy base, making this an excellent choice for picky eaters or little ones who aren’t always excited about vegetables.

Make-Ahead and Storage Tips

One of the best things about pasta bakes is how well they store. You can prepare this Penne Tuna Pasta Bake in advance, refrigerate it before baking, or freeze it for later. Leftovers reheat beautifully and make great lunches. To store, cover tightly and refrigerate for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 2 months.
