Cooking with Kids-Blueberry Peach Smoothie

Smoothies are delicious and fun to make. They can be made with a multitude of different ingredients. They are a great place to hide a few veggies as well, if you have picky kids who may not get enough good nutrition in their diets. Most kids like fruit, so the smoothie is the perfect vehicle to add a punch of health to their diet in a tasty way. Try your hand at creating your own smoothie recipe and you might be surprised what you end up loving.

These blueberry peach smoothies are always a big hit with my kids. They LOVE eating stuff they make themselves. It’s a pretty low maintenance recipe for the adults in charge, and that’s always a plus in my book. Simplify! That’s my motto. Anything you can do that the kids enjoy that puts little pressure on you, is a winner.

We used frozen fruit for these smoothies since berries were long out of season and we had some tasty ones in the freezer from our summer food preservation efforts. Blueberries are packed with antioxidants, tons of vitamin c and other nutrients, and peaches are as well of course.

Other great smoothie ingredients include: Spinach, kale, apples, bananas, any kind of berry, pears, pineapple, pineapple juice, apple juice, and the list goes on and on. Use your imagination!

Yummy Yogurt Parfaits-Cooking with Kids!

Kids love parfaits! Kids love yogurt and fruit. Parfaits are pretty, healthy and fun to eat. Getting kids involved in preparing food teaches them a plethora of skills such as math, pre reading, measuring, fine motor, and many others. Letting kids help prepare their own meals and snacks makes them more likely to want to try new foods as well.

Parfaits can be made by layering anything you want, but I like to choose the healthiest things I can find for the kids to use. The more colorful your recipe, the better. Food should look good because we eat with our eyes first! Parfaits are beautiful and encourage kids to try more healthy foods.

We used homemade yogurt for our parfaits sweetened with a little bit of honey. Once we mixed that together, the kids were able to spoon a spoon full of yogurt into the bottom of their snack cups and then add layers of fruit and granola and more yogurt. I let them be creative and make them however they want and with whatever they want. The fruit was offered in bowls after we cut it up. It was inviting to want to try all the kinds.

Another great fine motor skill builder in this recipe is cutting. I give the kids fruit and butter knives to cut it with and a small cutting board or plate to cut on. They love cutting anything. It builds self-esteem just like other self-help skills do.

We also used homemade granola to top the parfaits with. I like to make my own granola because I am allergic to cinnamon and nuts and it’s hard to find granola that doesn’t contain those. I also like knowing what is in my food and the food I feed the kids, so homemade is best for that as well.

Parfaits are a hit even with the most picky kids. They are super yummy to adults as well. I encourage you to give them a try with your kids!
